Dwarf Rats – Tiny, Social, and Intelligent Companions

Sundae Morning Rattery in Kamloops is proud to offer dwarf rats — a small-sized variety of fancy rat with friendly temperaments and all the charm of standard rats in a compact package.

What Are Dwarf Rats?

Dwarf rats are a specific variety of domesticated fancy rat (Rattus norvegicus domestica) that carry a recessive dwarfism gene. This gene reduces their growth hormone, resulting in a rat that stays much smaller throughout life, roughly one-third the size of a standard pet rat.

They aren’t simply “small rats”, they are a distinct variety with unique physical proportions, including:

  • Smaller body size than standard rats

  • Large expressive eyes in relation to body size

  • Shorter, thinner tail and finer bone structure
These features give dwarf rats a permanently “baby-like” appearance that many owners adore.

Size, Lifespan & Health

Compared to standard rats, dwarf rats typically weigh around 80–150 g when fully grown, versus 250–700 g for standards.
Because the dwarf gene also reduces growth hormone, many dwarf rats are less prone to certain tumours and, according to research, may have longer average lifespans than standard rats — though variability exists.

Personality & Social Needs

Dwarf rats are known to be:

  • Curious, playful, and intelligent

  • Highly social, they thrive in small groups of at least two rats

  • Capable of forming strong bonds with humans and cage mates
They generally require the same level of social interaction and enrichment as standard rats to stay happy and healthy.

Housing & Care

Although smaller in stature, dwarf rats still benefit from spacious habitats:

  • Multi-level wire cages with narrow bar spacing (rats are escape artists!)

  • Enrichment such as tunnels, hammocks, climbable structures, and chew toys

  • Safe bedding (e.g., paper or hemp; avoid cedar/pine)
Dwarf rats can explore, play, and nest just like any fancy rat — just scaled to their size.

💡 Important: Dwarf rats are social animals. Never keep a dwarf rat alone. Pairs or small groups are ideal for their wellbeing.

Diet & Nutrition

Dwarf rats require the same diet as standard pet rats, but in smaller quantities due to their size and faster metabolism:

  • High-quality rat pellets

  • Fresh vegetables and occasional fruit

  • Protein sources like cooked egg, chicken, tofu (in moderation)
Fresh water should always be available.

Temperament & Behaviour

Dwarf rats are active and inquisitive pets. Their small size and energetic nature mean they may be faster and slightly more agile than standard rats, and with gentle handling they can be affectionate companions.

Each rat has a unique personality from playful and curious to calm and cuddly — just like standard rats.
